Congratulations Janet Guelfi, Prep of the Week!

The Naples Daily News has named CSN senior and varsity volleyball co-captain Janet Guelfi their Prep of the Week for being chosen MVP at the Riverdale Invitational this week. Community School didn’t drop a single set at the tournament, defeating three schools in pool play and knocking off Riverdale in straight sets for the title. Janet showed she can get under the ball for digs and set up teammates for kills. Coach Rhodes said “She’s probably one of the best defensive players I’ve coached.”

Rallying her team is also one of her strengths. She is so vocal on the court she strained her voice after the week’s competition. Janet has played volleyball since the fifth grade and joined CSN’s team in seventh grade. She is hoping to lead the Seahawks to the state finals this year. Way to go Seahawks, and especially Janet!!

Water Water

Mr. Scott Miles’ Geography classes have been studying the impact that population augmentation, aquifer infusion and harmful pollutants have on our water system worldwide as well as in the state of Florida. Last week CSN parent Dr. Sanjay Shukla of the University of Florida came to speak with eighth grade students on water quality and supply issues. His area of research includes almost all of the south Florida region, including the (Northern) Everglades and Lake Okeechobee.  This opportunity allowed the students to connect global water issues with our own SW Florida water challenges.

Mu Alpha Theta Competitions Begin Soon

The first Mu Alpha Theta (MAO) tournament is in a few weeks, and, as with any competition, students throughout Florida have begun training for speed and accuracy. Not an athletic sport, MAO is a mathematics honor society for high schools and colleges, serving over 108,000 student members in more than 2200 chapters nationwide.

This year the CSN chapter has over 100 active members, which is approximately one third of the Upper School enrollment. Students attend practice every Thursday during 8th period, and many participate in local and statewide tournaments throughout the year. Students compete both individually and as a team, and top students in the state are recognized for excellence in achievement. The competition is divided into three levels to address the abilities of all students: Theta (Geometry and Algebra 2), Alpha (Pre-Calculus) and Mu (Calculus).

Last year’s CSN team proved to be quite successful, with Jack Ciabaton (currently a sophomore) coming in 2nd nationally in Theta Geometry, and Cory Hixson (now a junior) placing 2nd in Alpha Applications and National Champion in Speed Math. Outstanding individual and team scores resulted in CSN’s recognition as the 3rd place school nationally in the small school division.

This year students will be attending the following tournaments:
November 14               Rickards HS (hosted by Ft Myers HS), Ft Myers
                        December 14               FCGU, Estero
January 30                  Cypress Bay HS, Miami
                        February 13                 Ferguson HS, Miami
                        February 27                 Sickles HS, Tampa
March 12                     Cape Coral HS, Cape Coral
March 19                     Palmetto Ridge HS, Naples
                        April 14-17                  State Convention, Orlando
July 10-15                   National Convention, St Louis (Washington University)

Recent chapter election results for officers for the 2015-16 school year are:
President, Ivan Wang; Vice President, Austin Farrugia; Secretary, Sarah Crespo; and Treasurer, Craig Schwerin. Each division has also has its own officers: Geometry, Annabella Galang; Algebra II, Nick Dounchis; Precalculus, Jack Ciabaton; Calculus, Kristina Cuello; and Statistics, Janet Guelfi.
