XC Going the Distance
CSN girls cross country team brought home the first District Championship trophy in more than five years on Thursday, Oct. 29 in the Class 1A District 12 Championships held at Ave Maria. The Seahawks edged Village School and Donahue Academy, with the three teams separated by only four points.
This victory was very special for the four graduating seniors. Grace O'Malley led the charge with her characteristic dependability. She finished 3rd at 21:39. Her sister Maria also earned top-10 honors for her 8th place finish. Right behind Maria were senior Loren Brown (13th), 8th grader Riley Confer (17th), sophomore Emma Smith (23rd), senior Bri Johanson (28th), and sophomore Caroline Guerra (31st). These seven runners will advance to the Regional meet on Nov. 6 in Lakeland, Florida, where they will compete at Holloway Park for a chance to qualify for the State meet.
The CSN boys landed on the other side of a two-point margin, narrowly missing the 3rd place qualifying spot to Regionals. They finished in 4th place behind the advancing teams of Donahue, Marco Island, and FBA. The good news for the young Seahawks is that all of the athletes in their top seven are freshmen and sophomores, and three of them qualified individually for Regionals. Freshman Chase Lupo qualified from 5th place, freshman Tyler Mastrangelo qualified from 11th place, and sophomore Jackson McAdams qualified from 13th place. In all, CSN advances 10 runners to the Regionals. Whereas the girls have their eyes on a qualifying team spot, the boys will be clawing it out to be in the top four individuals from non-advancing teams.
