NDN Prep of the Week Emily Hanus!

Emily is the first Seahawk to be named Naples Daily News’ “Prep of the Week” for 2016-17. According to Coach MacIntyre, “She’s had a really great week, and her leadership is what pushed her over the edge…She pushes harder than everyone else. She kind of sets the standard at that level of intensity.” Last year 12 different CSN students were so honored, one of them three times! Click below to read more about Emily.

The Council of Hispanic Business Professional hosted a “Latin Night” Gala to help with fundraising for college scholarships for Hispanic girls in Collier County. On the evening of Saturday, September 17, seniors Paige Inslee, Jackie Zeller and Chris Childs, and juniors Lea Schulz, Lizzy Ralton and Katie Markham, volunteered their time to help make this event a success. The CHBP Board of Directors was highly impressed with our students’ ability to communicate and comfortably interact in a bilingual and multicultural setting. The President of the Council, in recognition and appreciation for their volunteer service, personally invited all of them to stay for dinner and be part of this event that also celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month. Their former Spanish teacher, Sra. Villavicencio, is very proud of these students’ accomplishments.

Third grade artist Jordan Cross did an exceptional job on his Hundertwasser Flowers art, where the students learned about creating contrast using warm and cool colors. Jordan’s artwork has been uploaded to Artsonia, where he has his own online art portfolio. Students are learning to write Artist Statements that tell the viewer something about their art. Jordan’s friends and family from far away can be “fans” and view his latest creation!

Munich Exchange 2016 Update

Guten Tag! Eleven CSN students in grades 8-10 are currently in Munich, Germany at our sister school Bavarian International School (BIS). Our students are living with BIS host families, attending BIS classes, and exploring everything Munich has to offer. Their outings have included a football match at Allianz Arena, the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site, Neuschwanstein Castle in the Alps, and a bike tour of Salzburg, Austria. The group returns to Naples on Monday, October 24, and participating students will host their new BIS friends in March 2017. To see their trip in action, check out the video blog which features a different student’s experience each day of the exchange. Danke!

CSN Celebrates Six National Merit Commended Students

In addition to the seven members of the CSN Class of 2017 who are National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists, we are proud to announce that six others have been named Commended Students! They are Katja Gilman, Aaron Harris, Bruce Nakfoor, Zachary Tretter, John Vito and Meghna Yadav. In late September, more than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® received Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit® Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. What wonderful models of academic excellence!

Get Your Robots Ready!

Nearly 20 ambitious CSN students from grades 2-5 invested several hours on a recent Sunday morning learning how to program Dash and Dot robots in preparation for participation in the second annual Wonder League Robotics Programming competition. In addition to gaining hands-on experience with computational thinking, these students are developing their creativity and persistence, as well as their collaborative and problem-solving skills. Over the next 45 days, these dedicated students will invest three more Sundays and three days over Thanksgiving Break in order to complete all of the competition tasks. Last year approximately 1,000 teams competed. This year, over 5,200 teams from across the globe have thrown their iPads in the ring. The top-scoring teams will win a $5,000 grant for their school and Dash robots for each team member. We wish our programmers-in-training the best of luck!

Making Beautiful Music

Three of our Upper School students, Bridget Denzer, Victoria Gendron and Kirill Kuznetsov, have made it into the Florida 9-10th Grade All-State Concert Orchestra! To put this in context, only three students made it from all of Collier County, and all three are from CSN! Their past and present CSN Strings teachers, and all the rest of us, are immensely proud of these students for their hard work and determination. This is truly an amazing accomplishment for them.  The Orchestra will perform at the FMEA conference in Tampa in January.

Middle School students had a chance to review a variety of campaign posters created by 8th grade students during their Election Unit. The posters, an interdisciplinary activity involving History and Art, colorfully and artistically reflect the candidates’ positions on various issue discussed during the election cycle. The unit culminated with students registering to vote then casting their ballots, as well as other Election Day activities.

A Perfect Score

Dr. Johnson reports the fantastic news that his former student, Welles Harris ’16, currently studying at UNC, was one of 34 in the world to receive a perfect score on the AP Macroeconomic exam last May. According to the College Board, his performance “was so superior that it falls into a very select category.” Out of 135,000 test takers, just 0.03% achieve this result! The College Board letter goes on to say, “We applaud your hard work, diligence, and enthusiasm and wish you many future successes.” Welles himself wrote to Dr. Johnson to say, “Thank you for being such a great teacher and for sparking my interest in economics.” Congratulations Welles!

Golden Prep of the Week

Sophomore Emma Feehery won gold at the Class 1A State Championship meet on November 11 in the 500-yard freestyle. She will be in the record book as the first gold medalist for CSN in the history of our Swimming and Diving program! Her swim of 4:49.00 also qualified her as an All American, meaning her time is in the top 100 of all of the high school swimmers in this event. She cut six seconds off her personal best in the race, after taking a silver medal last year in the 500-free. Emma also finished 9th in the 200-freestyle for the second consecutive year. The Naples Daily News chose Emma “Prep of the Week,” saying she is “Collier County’s sole gold medalist in girls swimming this season. Prior to Feehery, the program has never had a swimmer win a gold medal.” Congratulations Emma!
