Teen Angels

For many years, CSN students have participated in a Teen Angel Project to benefit children and families in Collier County who would otherwise have little to celebrate due to their economic situation.  This year our students in grades PreK-12 were all involved.  A week ago was Pay It Forward night, when teachers and administrators, along with some US students, babysat for PreK-2nd graders, giving their parents a night to themselves.  Contributions from this event helped offset the costs of what all advisories in grades 3-12 purchased for the Guadalupe Center classes they adopted.  Our students bought clothes and toys for children ranging in age from infants to PreK who are enrolled in this program which prepares them academically for public school.  This Friday, many of our students spent their free day traveling to Immokalee to deliver the goodies, featuring Santa Tyler Rea ’19 along with his fellow student leaders Jessica Korn ’19, Lizzie Golden ’18, and Dominique Otto ’18.

La Nochevieja

Students in Señora Cordeiro’s US language classes celebrated the Spanish tradition of the oldest night of the year, La Nochevieja. Traditionally on December 31, in order to have good luck and health for the next 12 months,  Spaniards gather around the big clock on Puerta del Sol, a central plaza in Madrid. Others watch the moment on TV to welcome the New Year. Everyone must eat 12 grapes during the last 36 seconds of the year, as the clock indicates with its chimes. Not an easy task for slow chewers, but students tried to finish on time to say “Feliz Año Nuevo” with a mouth not too full. Watching the recording from this past New Year’s Eve, we see students eating their “uvas” for good luck. ¡Buena suerte a todos en 2018!

Academic Quiz Team Wins Again!

CSN’s AQT recently brought two teams to a 23-team tournament at Ransom Everglades. This tournament attracted the best quiz schools in south Florida, including both campuses of American Heritage, Cypress Bay, Palmetto Miami and, of course, the host school. Our A team went 5-0 in the preliminary round while the B team went 4-1. In the quarterfinals, the B team got revenge for their only loss by defeating American Heritage. A team’s victory in the first round led to the semifinals match-up between CSN A vs. CSN B. The B team was on fire, and in an upset was victorious! B team then played our friends at Palmetto Ridge in the finals. B team quickly fell behind 175-0 but they refused to lose, and on the penultimate question pulled ahead and held on to clinch the victory on the last question of the match! A team won their consolation match. It was a great day for CSN as we took first and third in the tournament. The B team is captained by Gabriella On-Cuen ’20 with her teammates Leaf Kalikow ’18, and Thomas Kralik ’21. The A team is led by Bridget Denzer ’19, with teammates Jack Ciabaton ’18, Graham Murphey ’20, and Nick Diamond ’21.

All New for 2018

The LMA is open for business!  The G&L Theatre has all new floors, seats, stage and paint due to Irma’s visit in September, and is now ready for assemblies and performances.  Most of the damage was caused by water blowing in under the doors.  With the sloping theatre floor, the water had flowed throughout the space, damaging seats, stage, etc.
After the storm, our librarians had to box up the school’s entire book collection (over 28,000 volumes) in preparation for library repairs and renovation. Thinking ahead before packing up, they loaded eight library carts and several rolling bins with titles for grades PreK3-5.  For the next three and a half months, the librarians continued to meet with all LS students in their classrooms on a weekly basis.  MS students who had visited the library before Irma were able to keep their books until before the holiday break. Titles were ordered for those students who made special requests.  With all of this we still managed to pull off an incredibly successful book fair!
When all the books were removed, the library was repainted, and received new carpeting, ceiling tiles, brick pavers in the courtyard, and some new windows.  Our library staff and student volunteers worked over the break re-shelving the thousands of books, and parent Wendy Grossman created this lovely welcoming bulletin board.
In addition to the theatre and the library, there are three computer labs in the LMA, housing 18 iMac computers and an iMac teacher station in each. The library also has eight iMacs used for reference and research, and two iPads for searching for and selecting books. Thankfully, there was no damage to any of the computers nor the Network Room which houses our school’s server! All this equipment had to be carefully moved, and computer classes were temporarily relocated to the Lecture Hall in the Student Union. How lucky for all CSN that we have this beautiful new building!
All that’s left to do is complete a few finishing touches and arrange the furniture and computers in the labs, and the entire building is set for 2018 and beyond.  Who said there’s no such thing as a silver lining?

Ambassador Ryan Crocker Visits CSN

Ambassador Ryan Crocker visited CSN on Monday, January 8, to address US students and members of the RHO KAPPA Honor Society. Listening to Ambassador Crocker, an expert in Middle East politics and former U.S. ambassador to six different countries in the region, was inspiring for those interested in a Foreign Service career. He began by telling the attendees what it means to be an ambassador and a Foreign Service officer. He discussed how learning a foreign language, and having a desire to learn history and understanding politics, were vital to the position. As a Foreign Service officer, whether State Department or CIA, one’s personal political beliefs do not matter, he asserted. It is the officer’s duty to serve the current administration and carry out its directives, since that is whom the people elected to make decisions on policy. Mr. Crocker shared his thoughts on how past and current administrations have been handling important international issues.

Ambassador Crocker then moved on to the topic of his experiences in the Middle East, and how different policies affected the region. He also elaborated on the current state of affairs in the Middle East. Ambassador Crocker’s exemplary career included postings in Lebanon, where he experienced the embassy bombing; Pakistan, where he focused on the 9/11 attacks; Iraq, where he was placed in the still sectarian and ethnically tense region; and coming out of retirement at the request of President Obama to serve in Afghanistan.

At the end of the hour, he opened the floor for a question and answer session when students asked him about current affairs such as the Iran nuclear deal, the relocating of our embassy in Israel, and the Syrian civil war. The questions were perceptive, and his responses were nuanced but direct. We are greatly appreciative of his visit to CSN.

How to Shine Online

Mr. Josh Ochs, a social media and marketing expert from California, came to CSN on Wednesday, January 10, to speak to parents at our most recent Headmaster’s Roundtable.  He brought the interested crowd up to speed on how they can dialog with their kids on “How to Shine Online.”  In this digital era, it’s important to begin as a young tween or teen to create a positive online image to impress colleges and future employers, while avoiding bullies and predators.  His lively presentation went over a multitude of apps, what they are, how they are rapidly changing, and whether to consider them safe and positive (green zone), useful but with drawbacks (gray zone), or to be avoided completely (red zone).  He used humor to recount his own academic background, his marketing experience with Disney, his unsuccessful political aspirations, and his current consulting business writing books and traveling the country teaching students how to create a portfolio of accomplishments which will later appear on Google. This is the way resumés are created in the 21st century.

After receiving an enthusiastic round of applause from the parents in attendance,  Josh went on to speak with US and MS students themselves about their ability to control how others will judge them by their online history.

Matt Eklund to Join Duke University

Matt Eklund, a graduating Senior accepted early decision to Duke University—“Preferred Walk-on” status granted by the Duke Football staff as Kicker.  Matt is a fantastic leader, student, and student-athlete—he was a key player over the last several years for our State-bound Boy’s Soccer team and this past year was a tremendous addition to CSN’s football program where he shouldered the starting duties as kicker and punter!  We celebrate Matt’s success on and off the athletic fields and the leadership he continues to provide the CSN student body.

The Sound of Music

Four CSN students recently participated in what is considered the most prestigious student music event in the state of Florida, 2018 FMEA (Florida Music Education Association) All-State Conference. Valentina Askar, one of Mrs. Richardson’s fifth grade vocal students, was selected to the All-State Chorus. She rehearsed with the chorus for two days and participated in an amazing choral concert at the Tampa Convention center. Ninth grade cellist Panos Diamaras, tenth grade violinist Victoria Gendron and eleventh grade cellist Bridget Denzer, all students of Mrs. Si-Cheng Liu, were selected for All-State Orchestras.  They rehearsed with their orchestras for two full days and then participated in an astounding concert featuring incredibly difficult masterworks from Tchaikovky, Prokofiev, Ravel, Saint-Saëns, and Glinka.

The FMEA conference also offers professional development seminars for music teachers in addition to all of the elite All-State ensembles and was attended by four CSN teachers, Mrs. Liu, Mrs. Richardson, Mr. Yetter and Mr. Heck.

Congratulations to our four amazing CSN students and thank you for representing our school so well!

A-Team Challenge Tournament Begins!

CSN, the reigning A-Team Challenge champions, recently began their quest to be repeat champions of this prestigious local tournament. In the first match, CSN faced off against Mariner High School. Our group of quiz kids was too strong for the challengers as CSN won 380-60! John Neumann ‘19 captained our Academic Quiz Team, with teammates Jack Ciabaton ’18, Gabriella On-Cuen ‘20, Thomas Kralik ’21, and Sebastian Haedelt, ’19. The A-Team challenge is a six-county 35-team fast-paced tournament. Last year CSN finished 3rd out of all the quiz teams in the entire state, not divided by school size or region! Nationally we finished 173rd, with our goal to get into the top 100 this year.

You can watch last year’s road to victory on YouTube. Here is your chance to see the smart, hard-working, well-educated members of last year’s AQT in action. In order, the matches are against FWS Charlotte, North Ft. Myers, Barron Collier, and the championship match versus Ft. Myers.

SNHS

The CSN Science National Honor Society (SNHS) had their first student lecture organized by Jack Ciabaton ‘18, tutor coordinator, and Leaf Kalikow ‘18, guest speaker coordinator. They taught fellow members how to calculate the day of the week for any date. For example, they accurately calculated July 20, 1969 to be a Sunday. Also during the meeting, they formally inducted fellow juniors and seniors into the society and gave the elected officers a pin to recognize their commitment to the SNHS. Congratulations!
